Organization Overview The University of Rochester is a leading center
for teaching and learning, research, artistic performance, and clinical care. The University of Rochester is in
the unique position of having two CIOs, one with a focus on supporting the Medical Center, and the other with a focus
on supporting the academic and administrative areas of the University. These CIOs work together to provide cohesive
and comprehensive services to the University as a whole.
The University
consists of six colleges or schools: The College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering, the
School of Medicine and Dentistry, the School of Nursing, the Eastman School of Music, the
William E. Simon School of Business Administration and the Margaret Warner School of
Education and Human Development.
The UR Medical Center is comprised of the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry and the Strong

Rochester area. Information Technology (IT) opportunities at the University cover an array
of areas of expertise including administrative computing, academic computing, computer sales,
data center operations, networking and communications, information security and compliance
as well as support of research and clinical technology initiatives.
Role of IT As stated in the University's IT plan, Information
Technology is intrinsic to the academic, research and clinical enterprises of the University
and essential for achieving institutional goals. Increasingly, IT is the preferred means of
communication within and beyond a university. It is a significant aspect of patient care and
serves as a change agent in the teaching/learning process. Information Technology is
essential to meeting the administrative needs of the University and is the tool of choice
for research grant proposals, submission and administration. A vast variety of IT analysis
and increasingly powerful computers provide the stimulus for amazing research ventures.
Information technology enables support of the enterprise through:
- University Infrastructure, including support of 3 external campus internet connections
- Networking and communication services with over 32,000 internet connections, 26,000
phones and 15,000 e-mail accounts
- Data Center operations which currently supports equipment that spans mainframe and
client server systems in a 24x7x365 environment (600+ servers are currently managed in
our primary center)
- Information security and compliance
- Hardware and software consulting, sales and site license management
- Help Desk support
- E-commerce initiatives
The University's Academic, Research and Clinical enterprises also leverage

and to assist with the adaptation and use of technology for teaching and learning. This
includes support of over 400 course websites.
- Classroom technology to meet the ever-increasing demands for in-class multimedia
- Advanced networking and communication services for research
- Computing and communication support for the student residential life experience
- A vast array of technologies supporting the care of over 1 million patient visits per
year in the Strong Health system. Digital imaging in radiology, electronic medical records,
pharmacy and laboratory robots, intelligent systems to assist physicians with lab, drug and
medical orders are just some examples of information technologies that are deployed to help
support the delivery of high quality patient care.
The University's critical administrative processes also rely on information technology for
- Enterprise system support with operations that cover over 40 administrative
applications such as HR, Finance, Student and Development systems
